How to Fill a Butane Lighter
Share
Just picked up a new butane lighter, but don't know how to fill it with fuel? Don't worry, you're not alone! Many people find the process confusing, but with a few simple steps, you'll be able to fill and refill your butane lighter with ease.
What You'll Need
Before you begin, make sure you have the following items on hand:
- Your empty butane lighter
- A can of butane fuel (we recommend a butane can with adjustable nozzles included)
- A small flathead screwdriver or similar tool (we recommend 4.0mm flat head)
Step 1: Prepare the Lighter
First, you'll need to bleed any remaining gas from the lighter. Before you do this, first make sure you are in an area away from any open flames or flammable glasses. Proceed by holding the lighter upside down and pressing down the refill valve with your screwdriver until all the gas has escaped. You should be able to hear the "hissing" sound of the butane escaping.
Step 2: Insert the Nozzle
Take your can of butane and insert the nozzle into the refill valve on the bottom of the lighter. Your butane canister may come with additional nozzle fittings in cap that you can use to fit your butane's refill valve. Make sure the butane can is upright and that the nozzle is fully inserted into the filling valve to prevent leaks.
Step 3: Fill the Lighter
Press the lighter down onto the nozzle of the butane canister and hold for 3-5 seconds, depending on the tank size of the lighter. Be careful not to overfill the lighter, as too much butane will cause issues with your lighter igniting. If you believe you've overfilled your lighter, refer back to step 1 to release from of the butane from the filling valve.
Step 4: Let it Rest
Allow the lighter to rest for a few minutes after filling to ensure the fuel settles properly. This will help prevent any issues with the flame or ignition.
Step 5: Test the Flame
Once you've filled the lighter, test the flame to make sure it's working properly. If the flame is weak or flickering, you may need to repeat the filling process.
Step 6: Adjust the Flame Size
If the flame is too small or too large, some lighters include a adjustment dial that allows you to raise or lower the flame size of the lighter. Locate the adjustment dial (usually located next to the refill valve) and insert your flathead screwdriver. To increase the flame size, turn counterclockwise. To decrease the flame size, turn clockwise.
By following these simple steps, you'll be able to fill your butane lighter quickly and easily. Remember to always use caution when working with flammable materials and never attempt to fill a lighter near an open flame.
